The ingenuity and audacity of the people of Scionzier ( chonverots), their unremitting efforts in their work have made our town an example : as early as 1743, various sawmills, mills, chocolate factories ….were able to function because of 29 waterwheels. In 1895 electricity and the telephone arrived.
Scionzier was the
2nd town in Haute-Savoie completely powered by electricity from 1906.
To meet the needs of a young and active population, Scionzier is equipped with 2 nursery schools with canteen, a first school with 450 pupils, a secondary school , a school of music , a media centre , a youth information centre…
Its activities service has 4 separate services which offer extra-curricular accommodation throughout the year corresponding to the needs of every age group. |

These same services ensure reception under the heading of “non-resident leisure centre” during the school holidays (except during the month of August). For the youngest children there is a team of childminders available to families. This will be reinforced very shortly by the creation of a crèche for 35 children (at present under construction).
The municipality strongly supports its many sports, cultural and charitable associations ( more than 60). Each has a long and rich history. As early as 1870 (the “sou des écoles” association having become a parent-teacher association) fire fighters, music, amateur theatre group ……….first cycling race organised in 1907. Our passion for football drove our ‘screw-cutters’ to the Colombes Stadium in the final of the French Championship : against Bordeaux in 1937 and against Béthunes in 1938. (A duathlon (Fédération Française de Triathlon Grand Prix ) is organised every year as well as many events (exhibitions, Christmas market…).
Although Scionzier does not really have a vocation as a tourist centre, its geographical position makes it an obligatory crossing point between Geneva and Chamonix and is near the many winter sports resorts (Flaine, Morzine, Avoriaz, les Carroz, le Reposoir, Grand Bornand). Annecy and its lake, the shores of Lake Geneva are only 40 km away!!
