The presence of vineyards would seem to explain the name of  “verchaix “ ( vers= towards, chai= wine store) for the wine growers went up to the wine stores to put away their tools. Verchaix  obtained its autonomy with respect to Samoëns in 1779  by founding its parish, after which the village became a separate commune under the Second Empire ,13th  May 1865. Its bounds were fixed at that time. Verchaix  now numbers 565  inhabitants  called the  lhottis ( a term derived from the lhotte , a tool used to pick the grapes and  to move the earth from the bottom of the fields to the top).

In summer Verchaix  offers you numerous activities :  mountain walks and hikes (900 km of marked out paths on  Joux Plane, the  Upper Giffre and the whole of the Grand-Massif), mountain biking (600 km  of marked out  courses  on Joux Plane, the Upper Giffre and the whole of the Grand-Massif), running water sports, paragliding, fishing, horse-riding, tennis, mini-

golf, as well as various events (sports competitions, shows,  concerts...).
